Newmarket Sufflok: A historic market town located in the far west of Suffolk, England, Newmarket is best known for its racecourse and for its being the HQ of the Jockey Club. The town itself has a population of around 15,000 and it is situated some sixty five miles from central London. Horse racing is recorded as taking place in Newmarket since the 12th century, making it the earliest known post-classical racing venue in the world.

Newmarket History: From the Stone Age onwards, flint was mined at Grimes Graves, to the north of present day Newmarket, and was used to make tools for early settlers of the region. The flint was transported around the country via the ancient Icknield Way, which crossed Newmarket Heath and the town, even before the Romans arrived in Britain.
In around AD 1200 Sir Richard de Argentein became Lord of the Manor, receiving the land as part of a marriage dowry, he soon requested a charter for the town from Henry III, and when this was granted, the town was able to hold a market.
Newmarket Racing History: The history of horse racing in Newmarket began in the 12th century (around 1174), though it was the Stuart King James I, who properly established the town as a significant horse racing centre, it was also James who built the first grandstand on Newmarket Heath.
The town first came to the attention of James I when he was hunting hare at Fordham, he subsequently established himself in an old inn called The Griffin, and later bought the building for four hundred pounds, using it as a hunting lodge and base.
After The Griffin collapsed, he bought another inn, The Sun Inn, which was soon demolished and replaced by a lavish royal palace for himself and his son (soon to be Charles I). Charles took part in many of Newmarket’s early horse races, and he was said to be an excellent rider.
In turn his son (Charles II) continued the tradition and was a frequent visitor to Newmarket. Charles II (The Merry Monarch) did much to establish horse racing in Britain and by a 1665 Act of Parliament, instituted the first race to be run under set down rules in Britain.
Newmarket actually has two race courses – The July Course and the Rowley Mile, the two are separated by Devil’s Dyke, a large Anglo Saxon earthwork which stretches for some 8 miles, and is up to 11 metres high in places.
